What does the tool offer?
JeConcilie is a self-assessment survey that allows students of all ages who have a job to learn more about their own school/work balance situation.
Then, a personalized assessment is generated, offering young people a variety of tips and strategies to better balance the various aspects of their life and give priority to their academic success.
There are now almost twice as many young Quebecers aged between 15 and 19 years old balancing school and part-time work as there were 30 years ago.
Why are we interested in our youth’s school/work balance?
School/work balance is one of the individual factors that influence school perseverance.
Some studies show that working when also going to school can have several benefits for young people, but can also come with risks, such as a lack of motivation, school disengagement, absenteeism, psychological distress or exhaustion.
The main preoccupation of young people should be their school success: they should be aware of the importance of this at all times. By unifying our efforts of information and support, everyone, from school and community workers, to parents and employers, can provide the best conditions possible to help our youth, as much as possible, master the delicate balance needed between their school time and work time.
JeConcilie: Intervention tool
In school settings
JeConcilie is a great tool for school settings (secondary, adult general education, vocational training, Cégep, university) who want to be proactive in helping students prevent negative impacts caused by unbalanced school/work situations, and allowing them to live the best experience possible.
See the For professionals section.
In youth centres
Youth centres reach teens aged between 12 and 17 years old in a community context that is less formal than school. Activities on the subject of school/work balance can easily be hosted there by professionals using JeConcilie, which can provide them with tips to better support youths at risk of school disengagement, and help them work out the conditions that lead to a better school/work balance.
See the For professionals section.
In community settings
JeConcilie can be a great tool for popular education for community organization workers who support young people and/or their parents. Whether through individual activities, group activities or a mix of both, it can promote discussions about the various aspects of school/work balance.

At home
JeConcilie helps parents learn more about the various aspects of school/work balance, and engage with their child on that subject.

Who developed the tool?
JeConcilie is a collaboration between the Instances régionales de concertation (IRC) sur la persévérance scolaire et la réussite éducative and ÉCOBES – Recherche et transfert at the Cégep de Jonquière. IRCs are represented nationally by the Réseau québécois pour la réussite éducative (RQRE), who supports them in their mission and involves them in common activities that aim to improve graduation rate and young people’s qualification in Québec.
The website makeover was coordinated by the CRÉPAS (Conseil régional de prévention de l’abandon scolaire du Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean) and was directed by a committee of IRCs representatives. The English version of the website was realized with the efforts of RAP Côte-Nord and Réseau Réussite Montréal.
The Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail (IRSST) contributed to the contents of the first version of the website.
Useful data for school perseverance
JeConcilie lets us gather very important information on the issue of combining school and work within a given population. After compilation, this information can be used, for example, to draw a descriptive portrait of the balancing habits of various populations (focus on people from a specific region, on those from a specific school grade, those who work more than X hours per week, etc.).
On the other hand, a large amount of scientific data has been used in the contents of JeConcilie:
